Middletown is a city located in Middlesex County, Connecticut, USA, located along the Connecticut River, in the central part of the state, 16 miles south of Hartford. In 1650, it was incorporated as a town by English settlers under its original Native American name Mattabesek, after the local natives, also known as Mattabesett. They were one of the many Algonquian-speaking tribes along the Atlantic coast. The colonists renamed the settlement in 1653. The population of the city is 48,000 people.
