In order not to confuse the city with the state of the same name in the north-west of the country, Americans in colloquial terms usually call the city "D-C" or "Washington, D-C". The District of Columbia is an independent territory that is not part of any state. It was formed in 1790 by the Act of Residence and included the city of Georgetown, as well as the city of Alexandria (until 1846). The city of Washington was founded in 1791 and named after George Washington, the first American president. In 1871, the cities of Washington and Georgetown and the District of Washington were formally abolished as separate administrative units and merged with the District of Columbia.
