Colorado, the western US state, is a diverse landscape of barren desert, river canyons, and snow-capped Rocky Mountains. On one side of these mountains lies the Rocky Mountain National Park. In another part of the state, the Mesa Verde National Park was organized to protect the ancient settlements of the Indians, the ancestors of the modern Pueblos. These are unique dwellings carved right into the rocks. Denver, the capital and largest city of Colorado, is located at an altitude of about 1,600 meters above sea level and is known for its vibrant business center and numerous parks. The population of the state is nearly six million.
