The Quad is the central open space on the campus of the University of Washington in Seattle. It is a large, grassy area surrounded by academic buildings, and it is the heart of the university. The Quad was originally designed by the famous landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted Jr. in 1915, and it has been a gathering place for students, faculty, and visitors ever since. In the center of the Quad is a large fountain that was installed in 1961 to commemorate the university's 100th anniversary. The fountain is surrounded by benches and trees, making it a popular spot for students to relax, study, and socialize. The Quad is also the site of many events throughout the year, including concerts, festivals, and rallies. Surrounding the Quad are many of the university's most iconic buildings, including Suzzallo Library, which features a stunning reading room with a vaulted ceiling and stained glass windows; the Husky Union Building, which houses student services and activities; and Denny Hall, the oldest building on campus.
