Rhode Island, the official name for the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations, is the US state, part of the New England region and located on the Atlantic Ocean. It is the smallest US state in terms of area, but surpasses the other seven states in terms of population. Rhode Island was one of 13 American colonies that rebelled against England. Initially, the state consisted of two parts: Providence plantations (mainland, the largest city - Providence) and Rhode Island (island, the largest city - Newport). The population of the state is about one million people.
